macOS install guide

SyncTato Server for macOS runs as a small menu-bar (tray) app. Builds are currently unsigned, so there's one extra click the first time you open it — everything below walks through that.

Requirements

  • macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later
  • Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) — Intel Macs aren't built yet

Install

  1. Download the .dmg and open it.
  2. Drag SyncTato Server into the Applications shortcut in the same window.

First launch (unsigned-app warning)

Because the build isn't notarized by Apple, a normal double-click will say it "can't be opened." Instead:

  1. Open Applications, find SyncTato Server.
  2. Right-click (or Control-click) it and choose Open.
  3. In the dialog that appears, click Open again to confirm.

You only need to do this once — after that first approval, it launches normally like any other app.

Tray icon & pairing

A potato icon appears in your menu bar. When your phone asks to pair, a small window pops up on your Mac showing a pairing code — enter that code in the SyncTato app on your phone.

Firewall

On first run, macOS may ask: "Do you want the application 'SyncTato Server' to accept incoming network connections?" — click Allow. This is required for your phone to reach the server over WiFi.

Start at login

Click the tray icon to open its menu and toggle Start at login to have SyncTato launch automatically each time you sign in.

Data location

The database and encryption certificates live in ~/Library/Application Support/com.synctato.SyncTatoServer. Your actual photos and videos go under whichever media folder you choose in the app's settings — not this folder.

Uninstall

Quit SyncTato from the tray menu, then drag SyncTato Server.app out of Applications to the Trash. Your photos and database are left in place.
