Windows install guide
SyncTato Server for Windows installs like any other desktop app and runs from a system tray icon. The installer is currently unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen warns once during setup — everything below walks through that.
Requirements
- Windows 10 or 11, x64
- Administrator access (the installer needs it to install to Program Files and open the firewall port)
Install
- Download and run
SyncTato-Server-Setup.exe. - Windows will show "Windows protected your PC" because the installer is unsigned (not from a registered publisher). Click More info, then Run anyway. You only need to do this once per download.
- Click through the installer — it installs to Program Files, adds a Start Menu shortcut, and opens the firewall port automatically. No separate firewall prompt to click through later.
- On the last page, click Finish to launch SyncTato Server right away, or leave it unchecked to start it later from the Start Menu.
Tray icon & pairing
A potato icon appears near the clock (click the ^ arrow to show hidden icons if you don't see it). When your phone asks to pair, a small window pops up with a pairing code — enter that code in the SyncTato app on your phone.
Firewall
The installer opens TCP port 8443 for Private and Domain networks automatically — there's nothing to click through on first run. If your phone still can't find the server, check that it isn't blocked under Windows Defender Firewall settings, or that your PC's network isn't set to "Public."
Start at login
Off by default. Right-click the tray icon and toggle Start at login to have SyncTato launch automatically each time you sign in.
Data location
The database and encryption certificates live in
%APPDATA%\synctato\SyncTatoServer\data. Your actual
photos and videos go under whichever media folder you choose in
Settings — not this folder.
Uninstall
Use Settings → Apps (or Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs") and uninstall SyncTato Server like any other app. This stops the running server, removes the Start Menu shortcut and firewall rule, and cleans up the "Start at login" entry if it was on. Your photos and database are left wherever you pointed the media folder.
